Olga's visit in 1952
The Song of Hoydalen

If you follow the road through the Gylland-area and up in the forrest about 2.5 miles from the highway E6, you will find Hoydalen. Here came Per Gylland, Siri Evensdatter and their tree children in 1870. Theire home was about a mile from the nearest neighbour. People had lived here before, but a new house and barn had to be built. They had a cow and 3-4 sheeps. As everybody else in the Gylland-area did also Per make spinningwheels. But the income was poor here in the forrest. Arnt was born the same year they moved in and Even was born in  1880.

The daughter Marit was 23 year and the eldest in 1883. She had already been serving and living on other farms for a long time. This year she decided to emigrate to Amerika. Together with others from Horg she left on the steamboat Tasso from Trondheim the 24th of april 1883. She was heading for Ishpeming in Michigan, where many from the middle part of Norway had gone before her. On the voyage over the atlantic she met Jakob Flakk from Byneset, Trondheim. They did marry in Amerika and got 7 children. Marit was also an educated school-teacher.

In Hoydalen had her brother Jens died in tuberculosis in 1885. 1888 she helped her 24 year old sister Olaug with ticketmoney to Amerika. She did settle down in Duluth in Minnesota and was married to John Iversen from Orkdalen, near Trondheim, and got 4 children.

Their brother Arnt became 20 year in 1890 and his two sisters sent him a ticker to Amerika, but he died soon after his arrival in a fire.

Their father Per died in 1896, 60 year ols. Now it was only his widow Siri and their youngest son Even (16 year)  who lived in Hoydalen. They were thinking more and more about travelling to Amerika, to Marit and Olaug. Eight years later they received tickets from Amerika.

The 20th of june 1904 they left on  MS Norge from Kristiania(Oslo), heading for Duluth. But at Scottlands cost the ship hit the rock Rockall and went down. Only 28 of 678 people did survive.   Siri and Even found their grave at sea.

Siri did use Marit's travel-chest on her journey. It wasn't finished when Marit did emigrate in '83. It now had Marit's name and addresse in Amerika. The chest did now float on the sea and found in Scottland. It was then sent to Marit in Ishpheming, who found all the things that Siri and Even did pack for their Amerika-voyage. Today it is Marit's grandchild Marie who has the chest.

It became silent times at Hoydalen.

The sunday after Siri and Even had left, did Eli Gyllbakken go there. It was som quiet there she later said. She looked into the livingroom and notised some letters on the floor. The writing on some of the pages was in verse. It was Marit who had sent them home short after she arrived in Amerika.

Eli took care of these pages and  "The Hoydals-song" has made this place known and remembered ever since .

Marits daughter Olga did visit in 1952, with her daughter Patricia, the old place in Hoydalen. The house was gone, but a memorial had been placed there by the local people.

To day you can drive all the way up to Hoydalen. When you drive trough Hoydalen look for some small wooden steps on the left side of the road. Close to these steps you'll see the old stone-steps from the old house, and about 10 meters abowe it you'll see the memorial. But don't drive too fast. If you do, you'll pass by the old place at Hoydalen. Because the forrest starts to take back the fields in Hoydalen.
